sweet tamarind chutneysweet tamarind chutney

150g jaggery grated

60g tamarind pulp diluted in 3 tablespoons of water

4 tablespoons dried dates chopped

Large pinch chilli powder

1/2 teaspoon cumin powder

1/2 teaspoon rock salt

extra salt if needed

Bring the jaggery and tamarind to a boil and simmer over a low heat until the mixture turns shiny and the jaggery is completely melted.

If the mixture starts to get too dry and sticky add more water.

Add all the rest of the ingredients.

Simmer for 5 minutes.

Cool and serve at room temperature.

A sweet and sour dish that provide a change of taste in a simple meal. Goes with virtually anything from samosas to dumplings in yoghurt. It is made in every part of India to accompany different dishes.
