0.9 kg potatoes
455g onions
Salt and pepper
110g butter or margarine
An 18 cm deep loosebased cake tin greased and lined
Set the oven at Gas Mark 5 375 degrees F 190 degrees C.
Peel and thinly slice the potatoes (this can be done in a processor).
Peel and thinly slice the onions.
Layer the potatoes and onions in the tin seasoning each layer and dotting with a little butter.
Finish with a layer of potatoes.
Melt the remaining butter (about 30 g ( 1 oz)) and brush over the potatoes.
Set the cake tin on a baking tray and bake for 11/2 to 2 hours or until the potatoes are tender; the cooking time will depend on the type of potatoes used.
Turn out on to a warmed plate and serve piping hot.
