1 large egg
2 tablespoons milk
3 medium thick slices of bread from a small loaf preferably a day old
40g butter or margarine
Beat the egg together with the milk in a bowl season with salt and pepper.
Cut the crusts off the bread and cut each slice in half.
Now heat the butter or oil over a medium heat.
Then dip the squares of bread into the egg mixture making sure they are well coated and fry them in two or three batches for 1 minute on each side or until crusted brown.
Drain well on absorbent kitchen paper before serving.
serve with crisp fried bacon
Makes 6 squares
